No formal debate on health shake-up

Jersey Health Panel Criticises Lack of Ministerial Discussion on Restructure

The head of Jersey's health scrutiny panel has expressed astonishment that proposed changes to the island’s health service have not been formally discussed by the Council of Ministers.

Deputy Louise Doublet raised concerns after Chief Minister Lyndon Farnham confirmed no formal proposal had been presented by Health Minister Tom Binet. Last month, Binet outlined plans to separate the health service from the government, placing it under a new board with a central fund.

Doublet stressed that such a significant restructure must be properly considered by ministers. Deputy Jonathan Renouf, the panel's vice-chair, added that no cost-benefit analysis or comparisons with other jurisdictions had been conducted, calling the proposal "undercooked."

Binet defended his plan as "sensible," saying he had consulted health professionals and assistant ministers. He dismissed criticism as politically motivated, suggesting some opponents were still upset over losing office last year.
