Jersey Panel Raises Fresh Concerns Over Maritime Law Changes

A scrutiny panel in Jersey has once again voiced concerns about proposed changes to the island's maritime legislation.

The Economic and International Affairs Scrutiny Panel had previously questioned the effectiveness of the new rules, particularly regarding their ability to prevent people from operating boats while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Now, the panel is seeking clarity on who would be responsible for conducting breath tests in cases where alcohol is suspected to have played a role in causing death or serious injury at sea.

While a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is reportedly in place between the police and harbour authorities to carry out such tests, the panel noted that it has not yet been finalised.

The panel has requested to see a copy of the MoU, citing an ongoing lack of clarity over how the proposed legislation would be enforced.
