Jersey Secures IVF Funding Deal, but Eligibility Rules Spark Concern
Jersey has struck a deal with two UK fertility clinics to provide around 90 government-funded IVF cycles annually. The Health Department secured reduced rates with the Lister Fertility Clinic in London and the Bristol Centre for Reproductive Medicine.
Under new rules effective from January 1, all couples qualify for one funded cycle, with additional cycles based on income. However, eligibility is restricted by factors such as age, BMI, and relationship status, with both partners required to be childless, including from previous relationships.
Fertility charity Tiny Seeds warned that 64% of applicants might be excluded, citing concerns over restrictions for single people, step-parents, and those who previously self-funded IVF. Assistant Health Minister Deputy Andy Howell
acknowledged the limitations and said a review in March would assess whether changes are needed.
