Gender Pay Gap Still Deepest in Finance and Tech, New Figures Show
New data from Statistics Jersey reveals that the gender pay gap remains most pronounced in the finance and information sectors, where men earn over 20% more than women on average.
The report also shows the gap tends to grow with age, reaching its widest point among workers in their 50s.
In response, campaigners are calling for more inclusive conversations—especially involving men—about how to close the divide. One of the voices leading that charge is gender equity advocate Ms Mourant, who says many men are unsure how to offer support.
“We’ve been told by male colleagues that they don’t really know how to support us,” she said. “So we’re organising a roundtable to share experiences and explore how we can move forward together.”
She stressed the importance of confronting unconscious bias and societal assumptions: “This is not about people being paid differently for the same job—it’s about the average difference in pay across sectors and age groups.”
Mourant challenged outdated ideas that the gap exists because women lack confidence or drive. “These are myths. The gap reflects systemic issues, not personal shortcomings,” she added.
The hope, she says, is to build a more collaborative dialogue. “We won’t see real change unless everyone is part of the solution. Men have a vital role to play in that journey.”
