Jersey has been placed on high alert with a "major incident" declared as Storm Goretti approaches, prompting a red wind warning across the island.
The Government of Jersey urged residents to "stay home and stay safe," with the most severe winds expected between 19:00 GMT on Thursday and 03:00 on Friday. The major incident declaration will remain in effect throughout this period.
According to Jersey Met, the storm is set to bring heavy rain from 16:30 GMT, followed by force 11 winds reaching up to 90mph (144km/h) from 20:00 GMT. Forecaster Bryan de Gruchy warned that gusts could be comparable to those experienced during a 2023 storm that forced some residents to evacuate their homes.
“Wind speeds may approach levels seen during Storm Ciarán, when gusts exceeding 100mph (160km/h) caused fallen trees, flooded roads, and damaged roofs,” de Gruchy said. However, he added that the overall damage is expected to be less severe this time. He also noted the unpredictable nature of storms, particularly in the east of the island, which experienced a tornado during the previous storm.
Forecaster John Searson cautioned that both inland and coastal areas could face serious disruption. “Gusts are likely to bring down trees and damage buildings, with debris blown around. A high tide at 10:00 GMT, combined with a significant storm surge and large waves, makes it essential to stay indoors from 18:00,” he said.
The RNLI in Jersey warned the public to stay away from the coast. “Conditions could easily knock you off your feet or sweep you into the sea. Keep a safe distance from cliff edges, check weather and tide forecasts before going out, and always have your phone with you,” the organisation said.
Authorities urged residents to only contact emergency services overnight in cases of life-threatening situations. Schools are expected to open as usual on Friday unless parents are informed otherwise by individual schools.
Jersey Airport announced it will close at 18:00 GMT, reopening at 05:30 GMT on Friday, though some flight disruptions are expected. Passengers were advised to check with their airline for the latest updates.
Jersey Mutual Insurance Society recommended securing windows, doors, and outdoor belongings, preparing an emergency kit with water, non-perishable food, and a torch, and bringing items like bins and garden furniture indoors.
The Government confirmed that the Emergency Department will remain open but urged residents to attend only for genuine medical emergencies.
