Plans to abolish mortgage interest relief for landlords and reintroduce it for homeowners in 2027 were narrowly rejected by the States Assembly.

Deputy Catherine Curtis proposed the change, arguing it would help struggling homeowners and make the system fairer. Her motion was defeated by 21 votes to 19, with two abstentions. Curtis said she was disappointed the Assembly appeared to prioritise private business interests over public needs.

Treasury Minister Deputy Elaine Millar defended the decision, saying the relief provides relatively small sums less than £400 and mainly benefits wealthier homeowners, not renters or low-income households. She added that landlord relief remains under review, with recommendations expected in January.
