Children’s Book Series Supports Lifesaving Search and Rescue Service
A popular children’s book series aimed at readers aged 5 to 8 has released its latest edition — and this time, it's helping save lives across the Channel Islands.
Leo Seeker, written by Simon Applegate, tells the story of a small search and rescue plane from Guernsey. Through its colourful characters and exciting adventures, the series highlights the vital work of the emergency services in the islands.
A portion of proceeds from the new book will go to Channel Islands Air Search, a voluntary organisation that plays a critical role in maritime rescue.
“I wanted to create more awareness of the service,” said Mr Applegate. “We’re entirely reliant on the generosity of Channel Islanders, and every bit of support helps us continue our work.”
The books feature Leo’s daring missions with a team of rescue friends from Jersey, France, and Alderney — including Albert, a red French helicopter; Mona, a green-and-orange lifeboat; Christine, an ambulance boat; and the distinctive blue-and-orange lifeboats of the Channel Islands.
The first book, Meet Leo, launched in 2022, followed by More Stories About Leo in 2023. Each tale is inspired by real-life rescues carried out by Channel Islands Air Search.
Mr Applegate, who has been involved with the service since its founding in 1980, served as a pilot for 28 years.
“Between us all, we felt the stories were worth telling,” he said. “So in retirement, I picked up my pen and started writing.”
