Coastguard Responds to 115 Rescue Incidents So Far This Year

Jersey’s coastguard has dealt with 115 search and rescue callouts between January and the end of July, new figures from Ports of Jersey reveal.

The service, which works alongside the RNLI, Jersey Lifeboat Association, the States of Jersey Fire Service, Channel Islands Air Search and other emergency partners, has seen a busy season on land and sea.

This year’s total is slightly lower than the 128 incidents recorded during the same period in 2024.

Ports of Jersey said RNLI lifeguards had faced particularly demanding days at St Ouen this summer, with a mix of strong tides and sunny weather drawing crowds to the beach.

The authority also reported a rise in vessels breaking free from their moorings, which it attributed to persistent north-easterly winds.

Officials are reminding islanders and visitors to take precautions before heading out. Recommended safety measures include checking tide times and weather forecasts, wearing lifejackets or buoyancy aids, and ensuring someone knows your plans and expected return time.

Beachgoers are also advised to swim between the red-and-yellow flags at lifeguarded locations.
