Liberation Day Could Become Jersey’s National Day

Jersey’s Liberation Day may soon be officially recognized as the island’s national day if politicians approve a new proposal. The annual event commemorates the end of Nazi occupation during World War II.

Deputy Carolyn Labey, minister for international development, said the proposal follows consultations by the Island Identity project, with over 2,400 responses. Of those, 2,007 supported making Liberation Day the official national day.

Jersey will mark its 80th Liberation Day on 9 May with concerts and sporting events. Labey emphasized that formal recognition would help preserve its significance and reinforce Jersey’s unique identity.

The proposal also highlighted the need for a distinct Jersey anthem. Many athletes have faced uncertainty over what should be played when they win medals. The song Beautiful Jersey was suggested, with 50% of respondents supporting it. Until an official decision is made, sports clubs will be advised to use its chorus.

The debate on these proposals is set for 18 March.
