Three Major Workplace Investigations Conducted in Jersey in 2024

Three significant workplace incident investigations were carried out in Jersey in 2024, according to the island’s health and safety regulator.

In its annual report, the Health and Safety Inspectorate revealed it had investigated 51 serious workplace accidents and cases of ill health over the year, alongside responding to 140 complaints.

As part of its enforcement actions, the regulator issued a total of 36 legal notices—comprising 12 prohibition notices and 24 improvement notices.

The report estimated that workplace accidents and ill health cost the island over £1.75 million during 2024.

Among the three major investigations highlighted was a case involving Skinner Skips Ltd, which was found guilty of failing to protect the health and safety of its employees. The company received a £55,000 fine and was ordered to pay an additional £5,000 in costs.

The other two investigations involved a paramedic and a technician from the island’s ambulance service. Both were found guilty of breaching Article 4(a) of the Health and Safety at Work (HSW) Law, which requires employees to take reasonable care for their own safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions.

Each was handed a two-year conditional discharge and ordered to pay £500 in costs. Their application for leave to appeal the ruling was dismissed.
