Jersey Secondary School to Close Early Amid Soaring Temperatures

A secondary school in Jersey will close early on Thursday as forecasters predict the hottest day of the year so far.

Haute Vallée School announced that students will be dismissed from 12:20 BST due to rising temperatures, with Jersey Met forecasting highs of up to 30°C (86°F) and a UV index of 7. Last month, the island recorded its hottest June day on record, reaching over 33°C (91.4°F).

Acting headteacher Rob Allsopp informed parents and carers of the decision in a letter, stating that the early closure was made in the interest of health and safety.

"In the interest of student and staff wellbeing, we have made the decision to close the school early," he wrote. "There will be no lunch service available, but food and refreshments will be on offer during morning break."

The school will provide supervision for students whose parents or carers prefer them to remain on site until the normal 15:00 BST finish time.

Despite the disruption, Mr Allsopp confirmed that the school’s planned activities week will continue as scheduled, aiming to "end the school year on a high."
