Jersey's primary and secondary schools recorded a total of 164 student exclusions during the 2023/24 school year, according to government data.
The statistics were released after Deputy Rob Ward, Minister for Education and Lifelong Learning, responded to questions from Deputy Max Andrews.
Of these exclusions, 12 involved primary school students, while 152 were from secondary schools. Secondary school exclusions rose by 37 compared to the previous year, while primary school exclusions decreased from 18 in the 2022/23 academic year.
The highest number of secondary school exclusions in recent years was recorded in the 2020/21 academic year, with 150 cases. That same year, primary schools reported the lowest exclusion rate in five years, with only seven cases.
However, the government noted that the data from the 2019/20 and 2020/21 academic years might not be directly comparable with other years due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
