Jersey schools introduce five-item cap on branded uniforms

Families in Jersey are set to benefit from a new school uniform policy limiting the number of compulsory branded items to five per pupil.
The States said the change should provide "a welcome relief" to parents, with some schools previously requiring as many as 11 branded uniform items. The cost of uniforms, PE kits and other school equipment can run into hundreds of pounds.
The policy, first announced in 2023, is due to come into force across schools by next month, ahead of the new academic year.
The move follows recommendations from the Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority (JCRA), which examined the cost and competitiveness of school uniform supplies.
Focus on affordability
The JCRA's market study found that branded clothing accounted for around 40% of school uniform requirements. Overall uniform costs ranged from £115 to £294 per child.
Education Minister Deputy Catherine Curtis said reducing the financial burden on families was an important part of making education accessible to everyone.
She said the policy reflected the JCRA's recommendations and would provide a stronger focus on social and economic value for families.
All 31 States schools will also be expected to make uniforms more affordable and provide access to second-hand uniform options.
JCRA chief executive Tim Ringsdore said the financial pressure of buying school uniforms had remained a concern for households facing higher living costs.
"As families prepare for the new school year, limiting the number of compulsory branded items should make a real difference," he said.
While branded clothing can help schools promote identity and belonging, Mr Ringsdore said the new rules offered a better balance between school identity and keeping costs manageable for parents.
The changes come as England also moves to reduce the number of school uniform items carrying school logos, with uniforms being limited to three branded items from September.
Eligible Jersey families can additionally receive up to £150 per child towards back-to-school costs through a government support payment.
