Jersey Zoo is celebrating the arrival of a new generation of adders as its summer breeding season continues.
Two of the zoo’s female adders have given birth, producing a number of healthy snakelets.
However, one of the mothers required surgery after unfertilised eggs remained inside her. Treating a venomous patient presented an unusual challenge for the veterinary team.
The zoo said the eggs were carefully removed to protect both the mother and her young.
“The team performed a coeliotomy under general anaesthesia to provide the treatment she needed, which was successful,” the zoo said.
The veterinary team has been praised for its skill and dedication in carrying out the procedure safely.
The zoo has also shared photographs of the newborn snakelets, describing itself as “adder-ly delighted” with the latest arrivals.
The births add to a busy summer breeding season at the zoo and mark another success for its animal care and conservation teams.
