Jersey Reports Continued Improvements in Air Quality for 2024
Jersey’s Natural Environment Water and Air team, part of the Infrastructure and Environment Department, has released its 2024 Annual Air Quality Report, produced in partnership with Ricardo Ltd.
Monitoring throughout the year included automatic measurements of nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) and particulate matter (PM₁₀ and PM₂.₅) at sites across St Helier and other locations, as well as diffusion tube sampling for NO₂ and hydrocarbons at more than 20 sites.
Results show a continued long-term decline in NO₂ concentrations, with levels at many sites now 40–50% lower than in 2000. The improvement is attributed to cleaner vehicles, more efficient engines, and reduced diesel use. Although traffic-related hotspots remain, 2024 data showed lower pollution levels across all sites compared with 2023.
Hydrocarbon levels have also fallen steadily over the past five years.
Looking ahead, the department plans to upgrade monitoring equipment in 2025, replacing older particle monitors with low-cost sensors and establishing a new reference site for PM analysis.
Environment Minister Deputy Steve Luce said the findings demonstrate “continued progress in improving air quality,” aligning with Jersey’s Carbon Neutral Roadmap.
