Jersey prepares to mark 81st Liberation Day anniversary

Islanders across Jersey are preparing to commemorate the 81st anniversary of Liberation Day with a weekend of ceremonies, music and community celebrations.

Events marking the end of the German Occupation and the Second World War will take place across the island on 9 May, with Weighbridge Place once again serving as the centrepiece of the festivities.

A packed programme of entertainment is planned throughout the Liberation Day weekend, including live performances, dancing, food stalls and family activities.

The annual Slave Workers’ Memorial Ceremony will also return to the grounds of Jersey Crematorium at Westmount at 3pm. The service honours the thousands of forced and enslaved labourers brought to the island during the Occupation.

Traditional Liberation Day proceedings will begin with a public service of thanksgiving followed by a historical re-enactment in Liberation Square at 10.30am to commemorate Jersey’s liberation in 1945.

This year’s ceremony will feature Trinity Constable Philip Le Sueur speaking on behalf of the States Assembly. Organisers said arrangements had been adapted due to the pre-election period, with Constable Le Sueur not standing for re-election.

Following the official events, the main stage at Weighbridge Place will host performances inspired by the 1940s era, with live music and dance continuing throughout the day.

Visitors will also be able to browse local craft and trade stalls while enjoying food from island vendors.

Saturday evening’s celebrations will conclude with a performance by Brick House.

Festivities will continue on Sunday 10 May with a more relaxed schedule featuring acoustic music, children’s entertainment and additional market stalls.
