Jersey’s Police Chief has issued a firm warning to motorists: drive dangerously, and you could soon find yourself in court. The message comes as the force unveils a new mobile safety camera designed to crack down on high-risk driving across the island.

Chief Officer Robin Smith said speeding and anti-social driving consistently rank among the top concerns raised by islanders. Recent reports of cars exceeding speed limits and late-night convoys racing through neighbourhoods have highlighted growing frustration within the community.

Smith emphasised that the primary goal of the new technology is prevention rather than punishment.

“My hope is that this new safety camera acts as a deterrent”

“My hope is that this new safety camera acts as a deterrent,” he said. “We’re calibrating it at a high threshold, targeting those whose behaviour is edging into dangerous driving. If this camera records them, they can expect to face the courts for some very serious offences.”

The device combines laser technology with an advanced camera capable of capturing number plates and photographing vehicles to accurately measure their speed.

Smith added that the timing of its introduction is significant, arriving just ahead of the festive season.

“As people gear up for Christmas celebrations, we know there are more parties and more opportunities for risky decisions,” he said. “You’ll hear us talking more about our ‘Get Home Safe’ message. It’s about encouraging everyone to look out for each other and avoid making choices—such as driving after drinking—that could put lives at risk.”
