The Government of Jersey has issued a reminder to residents and visitors about the regulations surrounding scallop collection in local waters.

According to the Marine Resources Department, divers are legally permitted to land a maximum of 40 scallops per day, while people collecting scallops from the shoreline are restricted to 24.

Officials also stressed that anyone diving or snorkeling for scallops must hold a valid permit.

As part of ongoing conservation efforts, scallops taken from Jersey waters must measure at least 10.5cm (4.13in) in diameter. The rules are intended to protect young scallops and preserve marine ecosystems.

The government said additional conservation measures are designed to ensure scallops have the opportunity to spawn at least once before reaching market size, helping maintain healthy stock levels.

Waters around the Channel Islands are home to two main species - King scallops and Queen scallops. King scallops can reach more than 20cm (7.87in) across and may live for up to 25 years.

Government figures show that 1,020 tonnes of scallops were landed in 2024, with around 90% caught using dredging methods and the remainder harvested by divers.
