Jersey Health and Care Introduces Ai Chi: A Revolutionary Water-Based Therapy
Jersey Health and Care has launched Ai Chi, a unique water-based therapy inspired by Tai Chi, aimed at helping individuals dealing with chronic pain and long-term health conditions that affect mobility.
Originally developed in Japan, Ai Chi combines Tai Chi principles with breathing techniques and progressive resistance training in warm water. This innovative therapy is designed for those suffering from conditions like persistent pain, lower back pain, and rheumatological issues, as well as anyone whose health impacts their ability to engage in movement and exercise.
The therapy sessions take place in the hospital’s hydrotherapy pool, where participants practice Ai Chi in shoulder-height warm water, benefiting from the calming and therapeutic effects of the aquatic environment.
Tara Richardson, Lead Aquatic Physiotherapist at Jersey Health and Care, introduced Ai Chi to the island. She explains,
"Recent research highlights the importance of integrating mind and body in therapy. Aquatic therapy, particularly Ai Chi, is invaluable for individuals with significant trauma, as the breathwork component is crucial in their recovery."
"The results have been incredible," she continues. "People not only experience physical relief, but they also report improved sleep, reduced stress, and an enhanced sense of well-being."
Ai Chi is still a new practice in Jersey, but Tara hopes it will become a regular part of many people's wellness routines. "I encourage people to try Ai Chi, much like yoga or Pilates, as a way to stay fit and healthy."
Marie Jenkins, who recently completed a six-week Ai Chi course through Pain Support Jersey, has seen remarkable results. "The hydrotherapy pool is already wonderfully relaxing, and Ai Chi has made it even more therapeutic. I feel completely immersed in the moment, leaving all my worries behind. I used to rely on crutches for 14 years, but now I don’t need them at all. Despite aging, I feel as good as I did 20 years ago—it's truly transformative."
Ai Chi offers more than just physical benefits; it empowers participants to regain control over their health and well-being in a soothing, supportive environment.
