The number of dogs in Jersey has risen sharply over the past five years, increasing by 25% since 2020, with more than 10,500 dogs now registered on the island.

Figures from the Constables Committee show there were 10,547 registered dogs as of December 2025, up from 8,456 in 2020. Labrador Retrievers remain the island’s most popular breed, followed by Cockapoos, Cocker Spaniels, Jack Russell Terriers and Dachshunds.

The rise in dog ownership has been partly attributed to the Covid-19 lockdown period, when many islanders chose to get pets while spending more time at home. That surge also led to growth in dog-related businesses, including walking, training and day care services, with more than 100 dog walkers and carers now operating across the island.

St Helier is home to more than 2,000 dogs, making it the most dog-populated parish. With such high numbers in urban areas, trainers have highlighted the importance of good behaviour and recall training, particularly to manage challenges linked to busy streets, lead walking and interactions with other dogs.

Professional dog walkers report that while owning a dog brings significant benefits, it also requires long-term commitment. Dogs still need regular exercise and socialisation regardless of weather conditions, and many owners rely on walking services several times a week to ensure their pets remain active and well adjusted.

Detailed breed figures from 2025 show there were 845 Labrador Retrievers registered in Jersey, followed by 705 Cockapoos, 631 Cocker Spaniels, 522 Jack Russell Terriers and 375 Dachshunds.

The report also found that traditional human-style names are increasingly popular among dog owners, with names such as Bella, Alfie and Molly topping the list. However, some island dogs have more unusual names, reflecting owners’ creativity.

For many islanders, dogs are viewed as more than just pets, often becoming central companions in daily life, from regular town visits to providing routine, comfort and motivation.
