Islanders were scammed out of approximately £406,000 last year through romance fraud, according to Jersey Police.
Recent figures reveal a rise in reported cases, with five incidents recorded in 2024 so far, compared to three the previous year. Police warn that romance scams typically begin on dating websites, where fraudsters build trust with victims before requesting money under false pretences.
Emotional Manipulation
Detective Constable Paul Otter highlighted the psychological grip scammers have over their victims, making them unaware they are being defrauded.
“They genuinely believe they are in a relationship, so they continue sending money until the fraud is stopped,” he said.
Vulnerable individuals, including the elderly, those suffering from depression or anxiety, and people grieving the loss of a loved one, are most at risk.
Common tactics used by scammers include fabricating emergencies, such as claiming a parent is in hospital and needs urgent care funds, or requesting money to release a gift stuck in customs.
“The fraudsters isolate their victims, making them distrust friends, family, and even the police, ensuring their only loyalty is to the scammer,” Mr Otter explained.
Significant Financial Impact
Although romance fraud cases in Jersey remain relatively low, police stress that the financial losses are often substantial due to the emotional manipulation involved. They urge islanders to be cautious when engaging in online relationships and to seek advice if they suspect a scam.
