Elizabeth Terminal Set for Upgrades to Enhance Passenger Comfort
St Helier Harbour’s Elizabeth Terminal is undergoing renovations to improve facilities for ferry passengers, addressing overcrowding and accessibility concerns. Originally designed in the 1970s and built in the 1980s, the terminal no longer meets the needs of the growing number of foot passengers using high-speed ferries. Ports of Jersey has acknowledged that peak-time congestion and limited amenities, particularly for passengers with disabilities, have been ongoing issues.
The planned upgrades include a dedicated departure lounge after security, additional seating, and an outdoor area. The Shipyard will offer refreshments, a children’s play zone, and improved accessibility features.
Port Operations and Security Manager Robin Fitzgerald said the goal is to create a more comfortable and relaxing environment for travelers. "We want to provide a departure lounge where passengers can sit, unwind, and access refreshments before boarding their ferry," he stated.
The work is expected to be completed by the end of May, ahead of the summer season. While construction is underway, temporary fencing inside the terminal may reduce available space.
Ports of Jersey has long-term plans to replace Elizabeth Terminal as part of a broader redevelopment of St Helier Harbour. However, officials say these interim improvements will significantly enhance the passenger experience in the meantime.
