The new chief executive of Jersey Hospice Care has revealed plans to reopen the King Centre, a community facility that closed during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Rachel Street, who joined the hospice in July following the retirement of former chief executive Mike Palfreman, said she wants the centre to offer support and activities for islanders.

The King Centre, located on the hospice site, previously hosted day services including respite care, physiotherapy, and complementary therapies. Since the pandemic, it has mainly been used for events, group activities such as a choir, and office space for the charity Family First, which assists families who must travel off-island for medical care.

“There’s a real desire to get the King Centre active again,” Ms Street said. “Sometimes it’s the simple things, like having a cup of tea with someone in a similar situation, that can make a huge difference. We’ve got great facilities here, and we just want to see them used.”

Ms Street, formerly chief executive at Heart of Kent Hospice, added that the team is currently developing plans to determine what services and activities will best meet the needs of the local community.
