'High volume' of patients causes ambulance waits

Some patients waited up to an hour to be transferred from ambulances to Jersey hospital's emergency department on a busy day last week, according to health officials.

Health and Care Jersey (HCJ) said the emergency department experienced "high volumes" of patients on Sunday 26 January.

It said there were "some short waits of up to one hour for ambulance crews who were transferring patients into the emergency department".

Officials said the most urgent cases were prioritised and all patients who needed to be admitted to hospital were accepted.

A spokesperson said: "HCJ worked closely with the Ambulance Service to receive all the patients and paramedic crews were released as soon as possible.

"It is important that people only visit the Emergency Department if they are experiencing a genuine medical emergency."

The ambulance service on Monday asked people in Jersey not to call 999 unless immediate medical assistance was required.
