Cheaper Access to Nurses and Healthcare Staff at Jersey GP Surgeries from Today

From 1 July, it will cost less for islanders in Jersey to consult with practice nurses, healthcare assistants, and other non-GP professionals at their local surgeries.

The Government of Jersey has extended its primary care subsidy, offering a £10 discount on appointments with a broader range of health professionals—including pharmacists, paramedics, and for the first time, telephone consultations.

This move builds on earlier price cuts for GP visits, which saw subsidies rise to £20 in 2023 and £30 last year.

Social Security Minister Deputy Lyndsay Feltham said the policy aims to make early access to care more affordable and reduce financial barriers to seeking medical help.

"I'm pleased to introduce this new support, which extends financial relief to patients accessing a broader range of primary care professionals, including nurses and telephone consultations," she said.

Feltham also thanked local practices for their collaboration, calling the expansion a step toward "a high-quality, accessible, and flexible primary care system for all islanders."

Dr Gordon Callander of the Primary Care Body welcomed the development, noting the important role that non-GP staff now play in everyday care.

"Many practices now offer appointments with healthcare professionals who can often meet patients' needs effectively. Recognising their work through this subsidy is a positive move," he said.

Callander also highlighted the growing value of phone and video consultations, especially for those who may struggle to attend in person.

The new subsidy does not apply to out-of-hours services provided by Jersey Doctors on Call (JDOC), nor to patients enrolled in the Health Access Scheme, who already pay reduced fees.

The expanded support is funded through the Health Insurance Fund and is available only to residents who have lived in Jersey for at least six months. Islanders are advised to contact their individual GP practices for specific fee details.
