Jersey Retailers Encouraged to Join GST Refund Scheme for Tourists
Retailers in Jersey are being urged to take part in a new initiative that allows international visitors to reclaim Goods and Services Tax (GST) on their purchases, as part of a broader effort to enhance the island’s appeal as a shopping destination.
The scheme, operated in partnership with global tax refund company Global Blue, features digital self-service kiosks at Jersey’s airport and harbour. These allow eligible tourists to submit receipts and reclaim £4 in GST for every £100 spent.
Simon Youden, director of the fashion retailer de Gruchy, which has joined the initiative, said the programme could help drive sales and form part of a broader strategy to attract more visitors.
“It’s a stepping stone to the bigger picture of increasing footfall and tourism,” he said.
Global Blue’s regional chief operating officer, Derrick Hardman, noted that while only a small number of retailers have signed up so far, many others have expressed interest in participating.
The scheme received a recent boost when the minimum spending threshold for a refund was lowered from £250 to £100—provided the amount is spent with the same retailer on the same day.
Mr Youden reported that the change had already influenced shopper behaviour. “If a customer spends £90, it gives our sales team the opportunity to suggest adding another item to reach the £100 mark—and the customer benefits from a tax refund,” he explained.
Eligible items include fashion, accessories, cosmetics, watches, jewellery, and leather goods. To qualify for a refund, visitors must present a valid passport and leave the island within 31 days of making their purchase.
