Government to step in after deadline to repair unsafe Rouge Bouillon wall passes

The Government of Jersey will take over work to secure an unsafe retaining wall on Rouge Bouillon after the deadline for property owners to carry out repairs expired today (10 June).

Temporary traffic lights have been in place between Drury Lane and Palmyra Road since the beginning of last month over fears the wall could collapse onto the pavement and carriageway, causing significant congestion, particularly during the morning and afternoon school runs.

Homeowners responsible for the wall were initially given four weeks to complete the necessary safety works. After little progress was made, officials granted a further two-week extension.

Despite the additional time, the Infrastructure and Environment Regulation Department said the required work has still not been carried out to an acceptable standard.

As a result, the department will now use its legal powers to enter the privately owned land and undertake the work needed to make the site safe.

Engineers will first inspect the wall to determine the extent of the repairs before work begins tomorrow (Saturday 11 June). The project is expected to take up to two weeks to complete.

The cost of the work will not be met by the Government.
