Families Urged to Discuss Water Safety During Jersey’s Drowning Prevention Week

As part of Jersey's Drowning Prevention Week, families are being encouraged to talk openly about water safety ahead of the summer holidays. This year’s campaign highlights the importance of starting these conversations at home with parents, carers, and children.

Tim Tredant of the RNLI in Jersey shared that rescue crews have already responded to several incidents this summer. He emphasized the importance of the "Float to Live" guidance for anyone who finds themselves in trouble in the water.

“We’re advising people to tilt their head back and relax. Gently move your hands and legs—don’t worry if your legs sink; everyone’s body floats differently,” he explained. He also recommended practicing the technique in safe conditions.

Throughout the summer, lifeguards will be on duty daily from 10:00 BST to 18:00 at El Tico and Watersplash in St Ouen's Bay, as well as Plémont, Grève de Lecq, and St Brelade’s Bay.

Mr. Tredant urged swimmers to choose lifeguarded beaches and for parents to remind children to swim between the red and yellow flags, which mark safe swimming zones.

He also noted that water temperatures remain around 15°C, advising swimmers to enter the sea gradually to allow their bodies to adjust, rather than diving in suddenly.
