Jersey Fire and Rescue Service has issued a warning about the dangers of cooking while under the influence of alcohol after attending two separate kitchen fires in St Helier over the weekend.
The first incident happened at about 21:30 on Saturday, when unattended cooking sparked a blaze in a home. Less than 10 hours later, at 05:30 on Sunday, firefighters were called to another house fire in the town. Crews rescued a man from the property and treated him for smoke inhalation.
Duty station commander Mark Bailey-Walker said alcohol can significantly increase the risks associated with cooking late at night.“The danger of physical harm is greatly increased if you fall asleep while food is left unattended,” he explained.
He also stressed the vital role of smoke alarms, noting that the man rescued on Sunday survived thanks to neighbours being alerted when the alarm sounded.
Mr Bailey-Walker urged islanders never to leave cooking unattended and to avoid using hobs as extra counter space, as this too can lead to accidental fires.
“After a night out, think about your safety and the safety of others. Choose a takeaway instead of cooking—it could save your life,” he added.
