Rising Food Prices Push Jersey Families to the Brink

Families in Jersey are being pushed closer to poverty as food costs continue to climb, according to the Consumer Council.

Recent figures show food inflation rose 4.1% in 2025. While lower than previous years’ 12%, chairman Carl Walker said the impact was still severe, especially for low-income households and families with children.

A petition to remove GST from food has gained over 1,000 signatures, though Walker warned the lost revenue would need to be recovered elsewhere.

Many islanders are turning to cost-saving options like the Olio app, which redistributes unsold supermarket food. Volunteer Natalie Standen said demand had surged, with families relying on essentials such as bread, salad, and bananas.
