Mother Urges Families to Talk About Organ Donation After Life-Saving Transplant
A Jersey mother who survived a rare and life-threatening pregnancy complication is calling on families to have open conversations about organ donation.
Louise Double, 38, from St Lawrence, almost died in 2018 after developing HELLP syndrome — a severe liver and blood clotting disorder linked to pregnancy. Her liver failed during childbirth, and she was flown to London by RAF helicopter for an urgent transplant.
Reflecting on her experience during Organ Donation Week, Ms Double said it was vital that people make their wishes clear to loved ones.
“Families need to know what their relatives want,” she explained. “If there’s doubt, it can lead to organ donations not going ahead. Having that quick discussion can save lives.”
Jersey introduced an “opt-out” organ donor law in July 2019, meaning all adults are considered donors unless they register otherwise. However, relatives are still consulted before any donation takes place.
Ms Double stressed that clear communication could make the difference between life and death.
“The outcome for so many people is life-changing and life-saving,” she said. “Families can grow and move forward with that gift.”
Organ Donation Week runs from Monday to Sunday, encouraging people across the British Isles to have these conversations and help transform lives.
