he Channel Islands Coop is introducing new facial recognition-style software in 10 of its Jersey outlets from Monday in a bid to strengthen safeguards around age-restricted sales.

The pilot scheme, described as the first of its kind in the island, uses facial age estimation technology to assess whether customers are old enough to purchase certain products.

A Coop spokesperson said the initiative was not just about meeting legal requirements. “It’s about protecting young people, supporting our colleagues, and showing leadership in ethical and sustainable retailing,” they explained.

Customers taking part in the trial will not need to provide ID or personal details. Instead, they can scan a QR code or use an in-store device for a quick check. The software then gives a simple yes-or-no response depending on whether the age threshold is met.

The Coop emphasised that no identifying information is stored. Images are deleted instantly after the scan.

By testing the technology, the organisation hopes to support staff while ensuring age-restricted items are sold only to those legally entitled to buy them.
