This June, EYECAN - Jersey’s only charity dedicated to supporting people with sight loss - will celebrate its 140th anniversary, marking more than a century of service to the island community.
To launch the milestone celebrations, the charity, formerly known as the Jersey Blind Society, is introducing The Reconnect Project - an initiative that honours its rich heritage while embracing a dynamic future.
Local groups are invited to participate in The Reconnect Project, which will feature aerial drone footage capturing participants holding large branded boards. In a coordinated moment, the boards will be flipped to reveal a transition from the original Jersey Blind Society logo to the modern EYECAN identity. This powerful visual display symbolises the charity’s evolution and highlights the community’s central role in its journey.
Islanders are also warmly invited to attend EYECAN’s official 140th anniversary celebration on 26 June at the Radisson Hotel. The event programme includes:
Conference & EYECAN Solutions — Featuring keynote speakers Mr Gordon Bowler and Dave Steele, alongside panel discussions, workshops, and a showcase of assistive technology presented by UK specialists.
Dining in the Dark — A unique sensory experience including a live poetry performance by Dave Steele and a blind auction of client artwork hosted by DJ Nelson.
Exhibition of Historical Items & Client Art — A curated exploration of the charity’s history and creativity, developed in collaboration with Jersey Heritage, with client artwork available in an evening auction.
Mark Coxshall, CEO of EYECAN, said: “Our 140-year milestone is a testament to the strength of our community and the importance of evolving to meet changing needs.”
Charity Development Manager Anne Audrain added: “Rebranding to EYECAN ten years ago was a positive step forward, but it meant we lost some of the original identity of the Jersey Blind Society. This project reconnects those two chapters as one - honouring our history while recognising the knowledge and experience that continue to shape who we are today.”
