Jersey Suspends Animal Imports Amid Foot-and-Mouth Outbreaks in Europe

Jersey's senior vet has temporarily banned animal imports from several European countries following outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease.

Announced on Monday, the suspension restricts the import of fresh meat, dairy products, animal by-products, and live susceptible animals from Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, and parts of Germany. States Veterinary Officer Susana Ramos stated, "This measure is designed to protect the Island’s livestock."

She confirmed that there are no known cases in Jersey and that the disease does not pose a risk to humans.

The ban also applies to personal imports, including commercially produced and packaged goods.

Ms. Ramos emphasised that foot-and-mouth disease is a highly contagious viral infection affecting cloven-hoofed animals such as cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs.

"The Animal Health and Welfare team will continue monitoring the situation to assess whether additional restrictions are needed," she added.
