Politicians in Jersey have voted against a proposal to make learning a foreign language at GCSE compulsory.

Deputy Montfort Tadier put forward the plan for mandatory language GCSEs starting in 2023, following a 10% decline in student participation over three years. However, the proposal was rejected, meaning language studies will remain optional for students.

Despite this decision, deputies supported measures to help primary and secondary school students who wish to learn Jèrriais, the island’s native language.
