Cycling Scheme Helps Riders Return to the Saddle

A community cycling programme using specially adapted bikes is helping people return to cycling after injury or illness.

Alan Chatterley, 78, thought he would never ride again after complications from knee surgery left him reliant on crutches. A lifelong cycling enthusiast, he had already been dealing with the long-term effects of a serious crash decades earlier.

That changed when he joined the Cycle Without Limits programme five years ago. He now cycles several times a week at Les Quennevais, using a bike adapted to meet his physical needs.

Chatterley said the programme had transformed his health, confidence and overall wellbeing, describing it as one of the best decisions he has made. He credited the specialist equipment and supportive environment for giving him the confidence to get back on two wheels.

Cycle Without Limits is run by the charitable arm of Jersey Sport and is funded entirely through donations. Organisers say the scheme was created to ensure cycling is accessible to everyone on the island, and they regularly support people who believed they would never be able to ride again.
