'Cutting edge' tech for older people given grants

Jersey Invests in Tech to Support Older Residents

Three innovative projects designed to enhance the lives of Jersey’s older population have been awarded funding through the CareTech Challenge, a government-backed initiative supporting technological advancements in healthcare.

The challenge, launched with up to £2 million in government funding, seeks to encourage cutting-edge solutions for long-term, high-quality care. Run by Digital Jersey, the broader initiative is distributing up to £20 million over three years to support projects that address key challenges facing the island.

Deputy Kirsten Morel, Minister for Sustainable Development, emphasised the importance of the selected projects, stating they would "make a real difference as part of our long-term healthcare strategy." He noted that Jersey is preparing for a significant demographic shift, with the number of residents aged 65 and over expected to rise by 30% within the next 15 years.

Among the successful applicants is Orchid Connect, a hybrid care service using environmental sensors and other smart tools to help older individuals maintain independence while allowing families to address potential concerns before they escalate.

Lifestyle Medicine’s Hero of Health Jersey app also secured funding. The app connects users with local healthcare services, digital resources, and in-person coaching. The company plans to launch it across the island, starting with GP surgeries, Jersey General Hospital, and voluntary organisations.

The third recipient is Good Boost, which utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) to develop personalized rehabilitation and preventative exercise programs. The project aims to establish rehabilitation hubs in community spaces across Jersey.

Tony Moretta, CEO of Digital Jersey, praised the initiatives, saying they "bring leading minds together to implement tech-driven solutions that can improve the lives of islanders."

These investments reflect Jersey’s commitment to leveraging technology to enhance healthcare and support its aging population.
