A long-established construction supplier in the Channel Islands has shut down with immediate effect after its UK parent company confirmed the business has ceased trading.

BrandSafway, the owner of SGB Hire Channel Islands, said the firm’s operations in Jersey and Guernsey have now closed.

The company had operated in the islands for around 70 years, running depots on Longueville Road in Jersey and Pitronnerie Road in St Peter Port, Guernsey.

SGB Hire supplied a wide range of equipment to both trade and domestic customers, including tools, construction plant, gardening equipment, event and catering supplies, site services and workwear available for hire or purchase.

The business is understood to have employed about 25 members of staff.

Adrian de Gruchy, chairman of the Jersey Construction Council, said the closure would affect many people connected to the company.

He said the impact would be felt by directors, employees and clients, as well as subcontractors and suppliers linked to the business.

“The council will not comment on the factors or circumstances that may have contributed to the decision to cease operations,” he said.

However, he noted that SGB had been a long-standing supplier to both the construction sector and household customers in the Channel Islands, providing hire services and related support for more than seven decades.
