Jersey Watchdog Warns Wastewater Charge Could Undermine Hygiene

A proposed liquid-waste tax in Jersey has sparked warnings that residents may cut back on flushing and showering. The government plans to raise about £10m to upgrade the ageing drainage network, with the fee expected to be introduced in 2028. Details of the charge, including how much households would pay, have not yet been released.

The Jersey Consumer Council said the scheme risks discouraging good hygiene, particularly among vulnerable people already struggling with rising living costs.

Infrastructure Minister Andy Jehan argued the upgrade is essential to replace Victorian-era infrastructure and ensure equal access to a modern drainage system. Public reaction in St Helier was mixed, with some residents accepting the need for investment and others questioning why existing taxes cannot cover the cost.

Hospitality businesses warned the charge could hit them especially hard due to high wastewater output, with venue owners saying it may result in higher prices for customers.
