Top dogs from across Guernsey, Jersey, and the UK are preparing to compete for one of the region’s most prestigious canine honours, celebrating excellence across a wide range of breeds and dog sports.

The Channel Islands’ traditional warm-up to Crufts returns this weekend with the Channel Islands’ Dog of the Year competition, drawing skilled dogs and handlers from both islands as well as visitors from the UK.

More than 50 dogs are expected to take part at the Royal Showground in Trinity on Saturday, 14 February. Competitions will span multiple disciplines, including agility, obedience, and other sporting events. Spectators can attend free of charge between 9am and 1pm.

Lorraine Stuart-Smith, President of The Kennel Club for Jersey, welcomed the growing number of off-island participants, saying it is encouraging to see more visitors making the journey.

She noted that while many familiar competitors return each year, increased travel opportunities have enabled more UK entrants to attend. The influx brings greater variety to the show and offers visitors a chance to enjoy the islands’ reputation as a scenic and dog-friendly destination.

Competitors are travelling by air from Guernsey, and organisers hope improved inter-island ferry links will make future participation even easier.

Judging will focus on how closely each dog matches its official breed standard rather than direct competition between islands, a task Stuart-Smith acknowledged is challenging for judges assessing such a diverse field.

Last year’s Channel Islands Dog of the Year title went to Mika, a three-year-old Tibetan Terrier from Guernsey.
