Fire Service Urges Caution with Disposable Barbecues in Hot Weather

Islanders in Jersey are being urged to take extra care with fire safety after two incidents over the weekend involving disposable barbecues.

The Jersey Fire and Rescue Service warned that some barbecues were not fully extinguished and “could have caused an issue.” With temperatures forecast to reach 29°C (84°F) on Saturday, the service is calling for greater vigilance, especially at the beach.

Deputy Chief Fire Officer Bryn Coleman stressed the heightened risk:

“The ground is really dry at the moment, and any fire could spread extremely quickly. With all this hot weather, I want people to bear fire safety in mind.”

Mr Coleman advised lighting fires or barbecues only in safe, suitable locations, well away from flammable materials such as gorse and hedgerows. He also recommended using a metal container and dousing barbecues with seawater to ensure they are completely out before leaving.

The fire service is operating with “very limited resources” at this time of year. Mr Coleman urged the public to call 999 immediately if they spot a fire and not to try tackling it themselves.

“Please be careful so we don’t face an unnecessary extra strain on our resources,” he added.
