A local campaigner and domestic abuse survivor has created a simple checklist to help people recognise when someone may be experiencing coercive control.
Samantha Billingham, founder of Stronger Beginnings, worked with the Government of Jersey on its campaign to raise awareness of coercive control during Domestic Violence Awareness Month this October.
Her “ABC checklist” – which stands for Appearance, Behaviour and Conversation – is designed to help people notice small but important changes that could indicate a person is in an abusive relationship.
Samantha said the checklist can be especially useful in workplaces, where victims may feel safest. “It’s about spotting changes – someone becoming withdrawn, avoiding eye contact, or seeming less confident. Even small differences can be a sign that something isn’t right,” she said.
Jersey’s Minister for Justice and Home Affairs, Deputy Mary Le Hegarat, said tackling violence against women and girls remains a government priority and urged anyone affected to seek local support.
Sarah Hamon from Jersey Domestic and Sexual Abuse Support described the checklist as “an easy, practical tool” to help people recognise red flags and reach out for help.
