**St Helier Businesses Divided Over £2.5m Broad Street Pedestrianisation Plan**

Businesses near Broad Street in St Helier are voicing mixed reactions to a proposed £2.5 million project aimed at pedestrianising the area as part of wider resurfacing efforts.

David Voisin, owner of the outdoor bar and restaurant Bar Levant, believes the plan would help breathe new life into the town centre. "The sun shines here all day long and people really enjoy sitting out here," he said. "Removing traffic will only add to the atmosphere. You’ve got to keep reinvesting if you want to keep the town vibrant."

Work is already under way nearby on Library Place and Church Street, which will remain open to buses and taxis as part of the broader scheme.

However, not everyone shares Voisin’s enthusiasm. Dr Ivo Raitchev, who runs a dental practice on Broad Street, has expressed concerns about how the changes could affect patient access. “I’m in favour of improving the town, but there needs to be more consideration for people with mobility issues or those under sedation who can't walk long distances,” he said. He suggested the government consider special provisions for those patients.

Opposition to the project has also grown outside the business community. A petition calling for the road to remain open to some vehicles, including those carrying Blue Badge holders, has already gathered more than 1,000 signatures.

Petition organiser Jackie Hilton-Egre criticised the move, saying: "The government appears to be ignoring what the public really needs—things like a properly funded health service and maintenance of public infrastructure. This money could be better spent elsewhere."

Infrastructure Minister Andy Jehan has said he will respond formally to the petition in writing. He has previously defended the project, arguing that improving public spaces can boost the local economy, support active travel, and improve the overall environment.
