Investigation Proposed into Historic St Catherine’s Breakwater

Plans have been lodged to carry out a detailed assessment of the stability of the Grade 1 listed St Catherine’s Breakwater.

Ports of Jersey (PoJ) said the aim was to protect the much-loved structure and determine the work needed to reinforce both the southern slipway and the northern buttress.

The buttress, which suffered storm damage last October, underwent repairs at the time but may require further strengthening.

If planning approval is granted, PoJ hopes to begin the investigations at the end of October.

Because the breakwater is a protected heritage site, any work must be authorised by the government, as well as heritage and coastal defence authorities.

PoJ’s public service obligations manager, Ande Vibert, said the project would involve “intrusive ground investigations” on both the slipway and the buttress, with the process expected to take around two weeks.

“We know how important St Catherine’s is to walkers, swimmers, sailors and ice-cream lovers alike,” he said. “We’re committed to preserving this historic landmark so it can be enjoyed for generations to come.”
