Bluefin Tuna Numbers Surge in UK Waters

Atlantic bluefin tuna are becoming increasingly common in UK waters, with scientists and fishermen working together to understand the growing population.

The species, once severely depleted by overfishing, has made a strong return. The UK’s annual quota has risen from 63 tonnes in 2024–25 to 230 tonnes for 2026–28, while the number of commercial licences has doubled to 30.

Fishermen in the South West say they are seeing thousands of tuna, with some describing the fishery as a valuable new source of income. Six licences have also been issued in Jersey.Scientists believe warmer waters, changes in the food chain and conservation measures may all be contributing to the tuna’s return. However, researchers stress that careful management is needed to ensure the fishery remains sustainable.

The return of bluefin tuna is being welcomed by coastal communities, although fishermen and scientists say responsible fishing will be essential to protect the species in the years ahead.
