Jersey's government is urging birdkeepers to remain vigilant during the ongoing bird migration season, citing a continued risk of avian influenza despite the island remaining bird flu-free since 2023.
The Animal Health and Welfare Team advised poultry keepers to reassess their biosecurity measures to protect birds in their care.
Vigilance Needed
Chief Veterinary Officer Susana Ramos emphasised the importance of monitoring for disease. “Although Jersey is currently free from avian flu, the wild bird migration season brings a constant risk. Surveillance has detected cases across Europe and recently in the UK,” she explained.
Registration and Biosecurity
Birdkeepers are encouraged to register their flocks with the government to ensure swift communication in the event of an outbreak. Registration is legally required for those keeping 30 or more birds.
Key symptoms of bird flu include:
Loss of appetite
Sudden changes in water consumption
Excessively watery eyes
Swollen head
Body tremors
Officials are urging prompt action and increased vigilance to safeguard both domestic and wild bird populations.
