Art Students Set to Revitalise Waterfront Underpass

Art students will bring their designs to life by painting vibrant murals in a newly reopened Jersey underpass on the Esplanade link road.

Inspired by the waterfront, students from Hautlieu School, De La Salle College, Beaulieu Convent School, and Highlands College are creating art for the Esplanade underpass, connecting the waterfront to St Helier. The Jersey Development Company (JDC), which organised the project, encouraged students to channel their “thoughts and imagination” into the murals.

To allow safe painting, vehicle access through the Esplanade Car Park underpass will be restricted between 09:00 and 16:00 on selected days.

Bringing New Life to the Waterfront

The recently reopened underpass improves connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists, linking the former Esplanade car park to Route de la Liberation and the waterfront. JDC CEO Lee Henry shared his excitement about the project, saying, "We’ve been thoroughly impressed by the students’ enthusiasm and ideas for transforming this space.”

Jamie Cole, head of art at Hautlieu School, praised his Year 12 A-Level Art students for taking the lead on the design. “The project has shaped a visual style that integrates community elements and public art motifs,” he said, adding that the students are eager for future projects.

Throughout the painting period, pedestrian and cyclist access to Trenton Square will remain open. The project will continue until 21 November.
