A new bank of solar panels installed on the roof of Jersey Airport’s cargo terminal has officially begun generating electricity, in what officials describe as a significant boost for the island’s renewable-energy ambitions.

According to Jersey Electricity, the array spans roughly 3,200 square metres and is expected to produce close to 420,000 kWh of electricity each year—enough to supply the annual consumption of around 60 all-electric homes. The system is designed to deliver that output consistently for the next quarter-century.

Ports of Jersey, which partnered with the utility on the project, said the installation shows how existing airport infrastructure can be used to advance the island’s environmental goals.

“We’re proud to partner with Jersey Electricity on this important renewable energy project”

“We’re proud to partner with Jersey Electricity on this important renewable energy project,” said Matt Thomas, chief executive of Ports of Jersey. “Making use of our cargo terminal roof for solar generation demonstrates the practical steps we can take to cut emissions and support Jersey’s sustainability agenda. This initiative underscores our commitment to a cleaner, greener future.”

Jersey Electricity CEO Chris Ambler said the commissioning of the airport array caps what has been “a milestone year” for local solar generation.

“It’s been a pleasure working with Ports on another major rooftop installation,” Ambler said. “The project will create a revenue stream for the airport as the site owner, while giving us access to a stable, long-term source of low-carbon power.”

Ambler added that the year has seen multiple new rooftop partnerships come online alongside the island’s first solar farm. “Looking ahead, we expect solar energy to play an even more meaningful role in helping Jersey meet its sustainability targets,” he said.
