A woman has been rescued from a smoke-filled flat near Snow Hill.

Two firefighters took her to safety after the incident which was thought to have been caused by unattended cooking, said Jersey Fire and Rescue.

Neighbours were alerted by a smoke alarm.

The woman was treated at the scene by ambulance workers and taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

Station commander Paul McGrath said: "Unattended cooking is an all-too-common cause of domestic fires. Please do not put yourself or anyone else at risk by leaving cooking unattended.

"This incident also highlights the importance of how a working smoke detector can alert those nearby to a fire before it takes hold.

"Thanks to the actions of the neighbours in this case, the amount of damage to the property was greatly reduced and prevented a more serious incident occurring."
