Rising Number of Teachers Leaving Jersey, Data Shows
New figures reveal a growing number of teachers are resigning from Jersey schools and leaving the island.
Freedom of Information data shows that 42 teachers—20 from primary schools and 22 from secondary schools—quit in 2024, significantly more than the previous year and three times the number in 2022.
The resignations follow a year of pay disputes and strikes that disrupted schools. While the Education Minister acknowledged a gradual increase in teachers retiring or relocating, he attributed the trend to personal circumstances and economic factors.
A previous survey highlighted concerns about workload, stress, and verbal abuse as key issues affecting teachers.
Meanwhile, the government says teacher numbers have increased due to investments in education, particularly in special needs provisions.
